A newer housing initiative program saw some great success in 2024 and is hoping to see more this year.

John Rigler III is the board president of the Highway 25 Corridor Housing Initiative (CHI) that provided matching grants of up to $1,000 for exterior home improvements in the communities along Iowa Highway 25, including Scranton, Churdan, Ralston, Bayard and Coon Rapids. He notes there were 37 of 64 applications that were approved last year, and the total improvements were $117,281. Rigler points out that in Greene County along, Scranton had $40,839 total improvements, Churdan was next with a total of $23,993 and Ralston saw $6,606 of exterior home improvements.

As for this year, Rigler says the program has expanded to include more communities in Guthrie County, including Guthrie Center, Panora and Yale. He states that projects can have up to $1,500 in a matching grant to make improvements to the exteriors of homes, and also for removing unsightly debris and dead or dying trees.

Applications must be submitted by April 15th and must include a “before” photo of the home, details of the project, along with a cost estimate for labor and materials, and an expected completion time. Applications are available at Peoples Bank locations in Scranton and Guthrie Center, at library, on Facebook and from individual board members. Applicants can be from single-family rental properties or home-occupied owners within city limits. Applications must be submitted to Peggy Hoyt at Peoples Bank in Scranton, at 1021 Main Street, or via email at 25chicorp@gmail.com
